Age Concern urges older people to call if they need urgent support

Age Concern is today working to set up a Hawke’s Bay 0800 number for older people to call if they need urgent support.

In the meantime, those older people living in Hawke’s Bay requiring support can call Age Concern on 06 842 1346.  Age Concern has centralised its operations to the Napier office for the Covid 19 response team.

Age Concern manager Carol Winters said they want to hear from those older people who need urgent help in the community, especially those who need food and other essential supplies and do not have anyone they can ask to shop or collect and drop at their door.

Over the weekend Age Concern phone calling volunteers have continued calling older people to reinforce the message to stay at home, this includes not going to the supermarket or to pick up a prescription.

“It is absolutely critical that people over 70 do not leave their homes.  We are establishing networks so that there is support in place for our most vulnerable who need our help,” she said.

Ms Winters hoped to have the 0800 number in place as soon as possible but said it could take a couple of days.
