August at The Globe Theatrette

While some big studio blockbusters are being postponed until next year, now is the time to shine for indie films, festivals and documentaries. It’s a great chance to see something a little different, challenge yourself and try out new things!

Our Cinema Italiano Festival is running until 7 August with a different hand-selected Italian film per day. With a focus on males in Italian society, the festival offers bittersweet comedies about mortality (Ordinary Happiness, Tomorrow’s Another Day), a drama set in the world of superstar soccer players (The Champion), a murder mystery surrounding a successful young entrepreneur (The Invisible Witness) and so much more.

Crowd-pleasing British film Military Wives (6 Aug) had its run cut short by the Corona lockdown, but luckily is now back for a proper season. If you haven’t seen this true story about a choir at a military base starring Kristin Scott Thomas yet, we highly recommend you do – and bring tissues!

The first New Zealand film to be released post lockdown, This Town (13 Aug) was filmed right here in Hawkes Bay and stars Robyn Malcolm as an ex cop trying to convict a young man who was acquitted for killing his whole family. Rings a bell? Don’t worry - this film is really a romantic comedy (yep really), so get ready for plenty of absurd Kiwi humour.

The plot of Antebellum (20 Aug) is shrouded in mystery, but the few things we do know about it are getting us mighty excited: It’s a thriller starring Janelle Monae as an author getting transported back into a dark chapter of America’s slave trading past. Will she find her way back? Goosebumps!

And finally there’s Rams (27 Aug), a comedy set in Western Australia starring Sam Neill and plenty of sheep – what’s not to love?! The story revolves around two estranged brothers trying to save their sheep herds, but we’re pretty sure we had you at Sam Neill. Should be a goodie.
