Video: Food rescue organisation Nourished for Nil, feeds growing need as cost of living bites
Food rescue not-for-profit Nourished for Nil is seeing new faces from across the community due to Covid-19 and the increased cost of living.
Founder Christina McBeth says they have seen a marked increase since the beginning of this year.
"We have seen an increase in the number of people frequenting our services through Covid, and through the increase in the cost of living. The people that come along are pretty much across the spectrum, and I would say the majority of the people that frequent our services, in whatever form they are coming, are in need.
Since starting out, the organisation has grown to four locations in Hastings, Camberley, Flaxmere and Napier.
In the mornings, they make food parcels for social service agencies, including those self-isolating due to Covid-19. The parcels feed enough for a family of five for four days with basics, a "reasonable" selection of meat and frozen vegetables, along with fresh produce.
While in the afternoon, they have their "food rescue approach", whereby food collected from supermarkets and manufacturers during the course of the day is given to members of the community.
