Hastings council seeks more feedback on Crematorium fees

Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst has asked for more of the region’s feedback on proposed new fees and charges for Hastings District Council’s crematorium and cemeteries.

At a council meeting today, councillors were asked to consider a proposal to hike cremation fees for people weighing more than 150kg by $200.

An agenda item will now go back to the Hawke’s Bay Crematorium Committee, which has representatives from Hastings District Council, Napier City Council and Central Hawke’s Bay District Council.

Mayor Hazlehurst said the fees and charges will remain as they are until her council has the feedback from the Hawke’s Bay Crematorium Committee.

"I have asked Council to take some time to look to this proposal very, very carefully and get some more input,” she said.

"We need to talk to our regional partners. It is important any new fees and charges for our region’s crematorium and cemeteries reflect the needs of our community during what can be very difficult and upsetting times.”
