Hastings library and art gallery opening hours this long weekend

This long weekend, Hastings District Libraries and Hastings City Art Gallery will be closed on Hawke’s Bay Anniversary Day (tomorrow) and Labour Day (Monday) but open their normal hours on Saturday and Sunday.

The community is encouraged to take themselves and their visitors to these facilities over the weekend.

At the gallery there’s still time to catch three exhibitions, featuring award winning artists, before they end.

Bob Jahnke’s project Lamentation only has five days left to run and anyone who hasn’t already checked this out is encouraged to pop in and be blown away by the works in this exciting lighting illusion display.

From the outside these pretty neon light patterns appear one-dimensional, but look closer and your eyes are drawn into infinite depths of pattern – this exhibition is a show-stopper, and finishes on October 27.

Visitors can also check out the display of contemporary textiles, Softly Spoken, before this exhibition ends on November 3.

Multiple artists have contributed to this engaging collection of fibre works, crafted by hand, and imbued with layers of meaning.

Also in the last days of its run is the exhibition of David Straight’s photography of acclaimed Hawke’s Bay architect John Scott’s works.

From intimate images of architectural details and moments to broader mood-filled shots of Scott’s most renowned projects including the Futuna Chapel and Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre, this record of Scott’s achievement and legacy is well worth a visit – ends November 3.

Napier artist Bernard Winkels also features with his multimedia exhibition – Nothing for No Reason in No Order, which runs until December 1.

Winkels himself describes these ceramics as a “pile of craziness” – decorated with scribbles, pictograms, jokes, slogans, this display will reveal new insights the more you look at it as it celebrates the daily routines we can all relate to.

If visiting the gallery while the Hastings library is open, pop in and fill out “The Future of Your Libraries” survey asking for people’s thoughts and vision for the district’s libraries for the five years ahead.
