‘Heart-breaking’: SPCA pleads for information after starving puppies abandoned near river

The SPCA is appealing to the public for information after two puppies were found abandoned near the Mohaka River, north of Napier.

The 6-8-week-old crossbreed puppies were found yesterday amongst long grass near the Mohaka River on Mohaka Coach Road, near Raupunga. The puppies were found by a member of the public who was working in the area at the time. The puppies, who are both males, had no food, water, or shelter.

The SPCA says it’s not sure how long they were left there for, but the chances are they were left there overnight or longer – they are extremely hungry and thirsty. The puppies are still very young and vulnerable and should still be with their mum until they are at least 8 weeks old. They are severely underweight and malnourished, very dehydrated, and have a large parasite burden.

The puppies, who the SPCA have named Monty and Milo, are now in SPCA’s care and are undergoing intensive treatment. Monty and Milo need fluid therapy and a slow introduction to small regular meals to help them gain strength and build their condition. So far they have been eating and drinking well and are being looked after by an experienced foster parent.

“Milo and Monty were abandoned with no food, water and nothing but each other for warmth. It’s heart-breaking to see vulnerable animals being dumped like this,” says SPCA Area Manager, Bruce Wills.

“We would like to find out more information about where Milo and Monty came from.”

The SPCA wants to hear from anyone who recognises Milo and Monty or was in the area they were found yesterday and might know something.

“We are reaching out in the hope that someone can share information about this situation. All information provided will be treated as confidential.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.
