Indoor bowls a family affair in Bay

Talk about the ideal promotion for indoor bowls as a family sport.

Yes it couldn't have been better when the Hawke's Bay junior singles and Hawke's Bay closed Henselite singles events were played in Napier on Saturday. They were definitely a family affair.

Long-serving Hawke's Bay representative Bruce Dalton won the Henselite singles with a 10-6 victory against David Mooney in the final. Dalton's granddaughter, Tracey Ludeman, won the junior singles final with a 9-5 win against Mooney's son Thomas.

Ludeman will represent Hawke's Bay at the National Junior Singles Champion of Champions tournament in North Wellington on August 29 while Dalton will play in the Napier-hosted zone final of the Henselite singles on August 22 where the winner will qualify for the Masterton-hosted national final on September 20.

In Saturday's semifinals Dalton beat Sue Fleming 12-7 and Mooney beat Michael Brown 13-6.

On Sunday the Napier open championship fours event was played. Three teams qualified for post-section play.

The elimination final saw Michael Brown, Glenis Cohen, George and Heather Lurajud beat Bruce Dalton, Darryl Le Claire, Debbie Viggers and Noeline Gardner 12-9. In the grand final Brown and his team beat Roger Davis, Colin Green, Robyn Reardon and Chris Davis 9-8.

This gave George Lurajud his first title.
