Infant in stable condition at Starship following near-drowning in Napier

An infant who suffered critical injuries following a near-drowning incident at the Napier Aquatic Centre is now in a stable condition at Starship Hospital.

An Auckland District Health Board spokeswoman said the infant was in a stable condition as of this morning.

Emergency services were called to the centre on Maadi Road, Onekawa at about 11.50am yesterday morning.

The infant was transported to Hawke's Bay Hospital by St John Ambulance with critical injuries.

A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokeswoman said the infant was transferred to Starship yesterday evening.

A police spokeswoman said enquiries are ongoing.

The centre, which is owned by Napier City Council, was closed following the incident and will remain closed for the rest of the weekend.

At the time, a Napier City Council spokeswoman said: "Our thoughts are with the child and the family involved".

"We will be supporting the Napier Aquatic Centre team who responded to the incident.

"Napier City Council is unable to make any further comment at this time," she said.
