Information sessions for those considering running for council

Ahead of the upcoming local body election on October 12 this year, potential candidates are invited to an information evening to talk about what’s involved in being on council.

The session is being held by the Hastings District Council and will provide potential candidates with a comprehensive overview of the responsibilities of councillors, which centre on strategy and governance.

Councillors and the mayor formulate the strategic direction for the district, determine the services and activities that are run by council, determine the budget and spending, set and manage the regulations needed to keep the district running smoothly, advocate on behalf of the community with agencies including central government and other local government authorities, and ensure the community knows how to be involved in the decision-making processes.

The council electoral officer, mayor and some current councillors will be at the session to talk about what’s involved, including the time and level of commitment required.

The electoral officer will also give details about the election process and key dates.

Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst encouraged people considering standing for the role to attend the information evening.

“We want community members to be informed about the role and its responsibilities.

“I encourage people who want to have an input into the future of our district and have the skills to work collaboratively with our team of councillors to put their hands up for this election.”

The information evening will be held at the Hastings District Council chambers on Tuesday, April 9, from 5.30pm to 7pm.
