December at The Globe Theatrette

December is a great month for movie-going, especially if you’re into warm fuzzies, feel-good vibes, and plenty of good-heartedness – and who isn’t?!

Don’t worry, we’re not going to smother you with soppy Christmas movies – in fact, there’s only one holiday-themed film in our December line-up, and we’re pretty sure it’s going to win you over…

MISBEHAVIOUR (M, 3 Dec) is the true story of the 1970 Miss World competition in London, when the reactionary beauty contest clashed with societal hot topics such as feminism and racism. If that sounds exhaustingly worthy, it really isn’t – it’s an entertaining and fun romp starring Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jessie Buckley.

This December marks the first time that Doc Edge is coming to Hawkes Bay! Previously the renowned documentary festival was confined to the main cities, but now DOC EDGE ON TOUR (10 Dec) is taking its concept of exciting, of-the-moment docos to the regions. Get ready for stories on whistleblowing in South Africa, an American chef’s trip to the top restaurants of France, foraging in the Yukon, war correspondent Robert Fisk, the mental state of a certain soon-to-be ex-president, and lots more.

A few years ago, a heartfelt movie about a London street cat (and its owner) became a huge hit. Now the Street Cat Named Bob is back for more with A CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM BOB (PG, 17 Dec). His owner James has finally escaped homelessness, but faces new challenges when the authorities threaten to take Bob away from him. Yes it’s cheesy with a cream topping, but people, it’s been a tough year – we deserve some cheese! AND cream.

Boxing Day marks the arrival of BLITHE SPIRIT (M, 26 Dec), a light-hearted period comedy based on a Noel Coward play, involving an eccentric medium (Judi Dench!), a novelist (Dan Stevens) and his two wives, one alive (Isla Fisher), one a ghost (Lesley Mann). Of course you had us at Judi Dench, but gorgeous costumes and setting, a witty if absurd plot, and a great ensemble cast make this the perfect family outing over the holidays.
