Napier gardeners with the green fingered touch: this competition’s for you

Calling all keen Napier gardeners – if you haven’t done so already, it’s time to get your entries in for the 2019 Napier Garden Competition.

Entries for the competition, which as always has categories covering a range of residential and commercial properties, those for first timers and the very experienced, closes on 1 November.

Napier Hill resident Kath Zaloum is one of those who took the plunge last year, and reaped the rewards, sharing the Outdoor Entertainment award with Russell Price.

As someone who loves gardening – it’s her way of relaxing – she was encouraged to enter the competition by a friend. She prefers a structured garden, with plenty of colour. She counts roses and “all the older plants really” among her favourites.

“If you enjoy getting out in the garden you should give it a go. It’s nice to have the feedback of other people who appreciate what you do, and who share a common interest. I thought I wouldn’t have a chance of winning, so it’s a great reward,” says Kath.

The competition is run by the Spirit of Napier Lions Club with support from Napier City Council.

You can enter a vegetable garden plus one category.

Judging will take place on 6 and 7 November, with the prizegiving to be held on 22 November. The overall champion garden is chosen from the category finalists.
