Lindisfarne College opens classroom to Flox as artist-in-residence.

Lindisfarne College has opened its classroom this week to visual artist Flox, as the artist-in-residence programme gets underway to introduce students to industry professionals.

The week-long stint aims to let Visual Arts students learn valuable skills and the techniques of Flox's craft. The week will culminate in her producing a large 2.4m x 3.6m mural for the school.

Coming from a background in fine arts Flox has made the transition to aerosol and stencil artwork with some of her work already featured locally in the Sea Walls art project in Napier.

“The workshops will, I hope, give the boys some insight into stencil-making and teach them about the technique of layering” she commented.

The concept of an artist in residence for the school is something that has been developed over the past few years by Mrs Harland, the Head of the Arts faculty.

‘Seeing a highly skilled practitioner in action and ‘living the dream’ as a fine artist has enabled our students to have a rare insight into the methods and techniques they use when creating their own art. They can experience first-hand, skills like building upon the application process, problem solving and critical thinking, which are such valuable skills to master in the world today.’ said Mrs Harland

The Lindisfarne College Parents and Friends Association funded the artist in residence programme as it sees the project as a valuable opportunity for the students.

"We are thrilled to support this venture, opening the boys' eyes to such a modern and respected artist's work, not to mention hearing her story first hand. Our fundraising goes into the sports, Christian, academic and cultural cornerstones of the college. This is something tangible and permanent for the college and the boys', while also quite personal for those involved." said Sacha Watt, the Chair of the Parents and Friends.

The artist-in-residence project has previously seen the College host multidisciplinary artist Cinzah who created two murals depicting elements of the school’s culture.
