Hawke's Bay Compilation Record Showcase - JAKE

Jake Murphy, who works under the stage name JAKE, was encouraged by family members to submit a song for consideration for the Hawke’s Bay Compilation Vinyl.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of JCole, 6lack and Brent Fiyaz, Jake has found himself producing music that can be described as smooth and catchy.

“What I aim for is unique”, says Jake.

“I have spent most of my years surfing, designing and over the last five years - being obsessed with writing songs. My music tends to be more on the “chill” side, but from the very start of my musical journey, I have enjoyed pushing myself and experimenting with different genres. So there is a decent range sitting in the vault”.

Jake’s songwriting process follows a seemingly linear approach. He will start with a beat, whether it be one he has found or created alongside a producer.

“Then I pretty much mumble a whole song structure and record that. Then go back and chop up the strongest parts. Then add words so it makes sense”.

The song “Podium”, that features on the vinyl, digressed from his regular songwriting technique.

“When I wrote Podium, I hadn’t touched music for a few months. I was over thinking what lyrics to write and had a bit of writer's block. So I decided to just let the words flow and didn't ‘try’ at all”.

Ironically, the song is based around the theme of overthinking.

Now having moved past the writer's block, Jake knows that this song is special. Even after listening to it incessantly over the years, he still finds himself enjoying the listening process.

His favourite part of the song are the lyrics “Not living a lot, but taking a shot to see if I float or swim”

“I just like the way that part sounds when it comes in” he says.

Jake strives to remain true to who he is as an artist, sticking to his gut and creating music that is a genuine reflection of him.

This approach has already proven to be favourable, with his first two songs making it onto the Hot NZ Singles chart.

Outside of music, Jake is an avid surfer and will regularly be seen frequenting the Hawke’s Bay beaches.

Jake’s goals for his future are to simply keep turning those sounds he hears in his head into songs, and for those songs to resonate with a wider audience.

The Hawke’s Bay Compilation Record- Under the Sun, Vol. 2 was produced by Backline Chartable Trust.

This record would not have been produced without the help of additional funding through Lion foundation, EIT Te Pukenga (Ideaschool) and Aramex.

There is an event being held at Paisley Stage, Napier to celebrate the completion of the vinyl. It will be on 23rd March 2023, 7pm.

For more information about this event, and about our local musicians check out the Hawke’s Bay Music Hub website and Facebook page.
