New Napier recycling scheme begins tomorrow
From tomorrow, an improved recycling service begins for Napier residents.
This means that kerbside recycling will be collected weekly, rather than fortnightly, and the three black crates provided by Council need to be used.
For residents this will mean getting used to putting just three council crates out. The crates are clearly labelled to help with sorting items. One crate is for paper and cardboard, one is for glass bottles and jars and the third crate is for tins, cans and Grades 1 and 2 plastic.
Reminders for the new improved service include: not overfilling crates and keeping them level or below the top, removing all food or plastic and ensuring items are clean.
Each crate can take up to 45 litres – a total of 135 litres per week or 270 litres per fortnight.
Napier City Council Manager of Environmental Solutions, Cameron Burton, explains what residents can do if they have too much of a particular item.
“Christmas is a classic example, with lots of wrapping paper and cardboard boxes to recycle. If you have enough paper and cardboard for two crates, then you can fill another. But still, make sure you don’t mix your items. Don’t put paper and glass together, for example. In this scenario, the glass would need to go in the third crate, and you would need to hold on to your plastics and tins until the following week.”
From 1 November, Smart Environmental Limited will take over the kerbside recycling service from the current contractor.
Cameron says that there are a few changes for residents to get used to, but he encourages residents to contact NCC or Smart Environmental on 0800 424 990 if they have any questions.
“I’m confident that once people get used to a few small changes it will become second nature very quickly.”
Smart Environmental will also have designated trucks to collect different crates, so residents shouldn’t be concerned if not all items are collected by the first truck.
“I encourage residents to find other uses for their old crates, bins and containers. But if they can’t, they can be taken to Redclyffe Transfer Station on Springfield Road. Another option is the annual Recycing Day held at Anderson Park on Saturday 2 November, 8:30 to 12pm,” says Cameron.
“The good news is, the old crates will be recycled where possible.”
