A guide to getting rid of flood-damaged furniture

Correction: Yesterday Hawke's Bay App stated that Henderson Road Transfer Station was accepting flood-damaged furniture at no charge.

Hastings District Council have stated that they are collecting flood-damaged household items for free. More information about this can be found at the following address: https://www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/cyclone-gabrielle/flood-damaged-household-items-collection/

Henderson Road Transfer Station is now open to the public to dispose of general waste and green waste - standard fees apply.

Seeing small mountains of flood debris still littering roadsides all over Hawke’s Bay, people may wonder just where they can dump their old three-piece lounge suite. With routine rubbish collection only now resuming for most areas, not to mention each district having its own rules on what can be thrown out, it can all be very confusing.

Hawke’s Bay App has compiled a list to guide locals on how to get rid of their silt-covered sofas and other flooded-out furniture.

For those in or near Napier:
Go to the Redclyffe Transfer Station on 193 Springfield Road in Taradale. It’s free of charge to all Napier district residents until further notice, but be aware that they are ONLY taking in flood-damaged household items. Any green waste such as grass clippings, shrubs or branch offcuts will not be accepted, along with any recycling.

Redclyffe Transfer Station wishes to advise everyone that long queues are to be expected due to the high volume of damaged goods from the cyclone, so please be patient as staff are doing their best to keep up. Furthermore, for anyone on a flood-damaged property who is currently unable to make it down, certain households will be notified by The Council at a later date for the second grace period on dumping.

“It’s free this week, but it is a good idea to get it done sooner rather than later. We’re still busy working out when the next free week will be,” Napier District Council says.

Their usual business hours still apply, Monday through Saturday 7:30 am to 4:45 pm, Sunday 9:00 am to 4:45 pm. They ask that all customers be off-site by 5:00 pm each day.

For those in the Hastings District:
You have an option of either the Henderson Road Transfer Station at 121 Henderson Road, Hastings, or the Blackbridge Transfer Station on Mill Road in Haumoana. Each station has its own times and limitations on what can be dumped, so it’s important to know these differences.

Important Note: Hastings District Council are making their way around impacted areas to collect flood damaged items for free. HDC says to be patient as they are still arranging staff, but if they missed your house, please fill out the form (link below) and they will get to you as soon as they can.

Henderson Road Transfer Station is now open to the public to dispose of general waste and green waste - standard fees apply.

Henderson Road is open from 7:45 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Saturday and 9:45 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday.

Blackbridge Transfer Station is run by an independent contractor rather than the Hastings District Council. They are also open and accepting flood-damaged items. Their hours are Thursday to Monday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Kerbside wheelie bin collection for Hastings resumed on Monday 20 February, with kerbside recycling services recommencing from today.

Lastly, HDC is pleading for people to NOT wash silt into stormwater drains, as this can cause blockages and could lead to further flooding and damage. They ask that you please stockpile mud and silt on your property away from the road.

“This is a temporary measure. We are working on a major clean-up operation to come and collect it from affected properties.”

For Central Hawke's Bay and everyone else:

There are four locations to choose from: Waipukurau, Waipawa, Pōrangahau and Takapau transfer stations.

Waipukurau Transfer Station is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Saturday on 177 Mt Herbert Road. They’ll accept flood-damaged items for a fee, but in some cases this can be refunded in 24 hours with a refund permit form which is available in their office on-site. You may also return a quote to your insurance provider who will repay the dumping cost, depending on your cover policy.

However, Waipawa, Pōrangahau and Takapau stations are not currently set up to take large or muddy items, so Central Hawke’s Bay District Council advises residents to take these only to Waipukurau Transfer Station.

“If you’re dumping whiteware and that kind of stuff, it’s better to go to Waipukurau because they have the facilities to deal with those bigger things,” CHBDC says.

Regular kerbside rubbish collections in Central Hawke’s Bay and Wairoa have also continued as of today.
