Aggravated assault on policeman among charges Napier pair face

A pair believed to have shoplifted, assaulted the police officer arresting them, before running away, only to be arrested again and charged a short time later.

The pair - a 25-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman - are scheduled to appear in Napier District Court tomorrow on a range of charges.

The man has been charged with 2x shoplifting, aggravated assault and escape from police custody. While the woman has been charged threatening language, 3 x shoplifting, wilful trespass, aggravated assault and escapes from police custody.

A police spokeswoman said they were called to a shop in the Marewa area about midday following a report of shoplifting by a man and woman.

"The pair resisted arrest on Latham Street and assaulted the attending officer, who was not injured," the spokesperson said.

She said the 'escapes from police custody' charges relate to the pair running away from the officer after they assaulted him.

"They were located and arrested a short time later in Barker Road."
