Air NZ's price drop: how much will Bay travellers really save?

Air New Zealand fares into and out of Hawke’s Bay have been dropped as part of a nationwide pricing restructure by the airline.

But savings for Bay travellers will be modest, with the new, cheaper seats on offer coming with limitations.

The cheapest tickets to Auckland and Wellington are now $39 – but only a handful are available on each flight and the new low fare is only for passengers travelling without luggage.

Until today, the airline was charging $49 for similar seats. So travellers able to book well in advance and travel light can now save $10 per flight.

Others may not be so lucky. A last-minute, peak-time flight to Auckland can cost up to $384.

A Flight Centre spokesman said it was unclear whether Air NZ’s pricing restructure was “revenue neutral”, meaning it was unknown whether the airline was genuinely cutting its prices across the board or whether some travellers would end up paying more to make up for the drop in prices for the new cheap early-bird fares.
