Bag of "tightly packed paper towels" at centre of Hawke's Bay DHB evacuation

A suspicious package that forced the evacuation of the Hawke's Bay District Health Board's Corporate Office in Hastings this afternoon has been found to contain "tightly packed paper towels".

Police were called to the building on the corner of Omahu Road and McLeod Street at about 3.30pm after the "suspicious item" had been located in the building.

However, police found the item was not "of any concern" shortly afterwards and staff were subsequently let back inside the building.

A HBDHB spokeswoman said the evacuation was a "safety precaution" as the item "did look suspicious".

She said the "tightly packed paper towels" were found inside a black bag that had been left in a hallway within the building.
