Container truck rolls down bank near Tangoio, emergency services working to free driver

Update: As of 9pm, the driver had been transported to Hawke's Bay Hospital. 

A container truck has rolled about 20 metres down a bank on State Highway 2 near Tangoio Falls.

Emergency services were called to the incident near Tangoio Settlement Rd, about 25 kilometres north of Napier, at 7pm this evening.

They are currently working to extract the driver. 

A police spokeswoman said the road is not blocked.

While the driver is "alive", the spokeswoman said they currently do not know the status of the patient, and won't know until they have been freed from the vehicle.

St John Ambulance and a rescue helicopter has been dispatched. Two fire appliances are also in attendance, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said. 

Earlier this evening, Two fire appliances and one tanker were called to a small scrub fire at the Bluff Hill Lookout Lighthouse Rd, Napier at 6.52pm.

Police cordoned off the road and asked pedestrians to avoid using footpaths around the area until the fire was extinguished shortly before 8pm.

The fire is believed to be suspicious.
