Crews stood down in search for missing fisherman, review overnight to 'inform further actions'

Searchers looking for a missing commercial fisherman off the Hawke’s Bay Coast have been stood down for the evening.

It is understood the man fell overboard the 'Pacific Challenger' - a Japanese-built 29-metre steel hull trawler - about 11km offshore of Waimārama at 8.43pm last night.

Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre said this evening that a "sustained search effort was carried out today" with helicopters around the North Island and two NZDF NH90s tasked alongside Coastguard Hawke's Bay and three vessels.

"However, just before nightfall the helicopters and vessels supporting it were sent back to shore. A review will take place overnight, and it will inform further actions."
