D-Day for thousands of Hawke's Bay NCEA students

After more than a month of waiting for exam results, thousands of high school students are finally able to how they performed in their end-of-year exams and whether they have achieved an NCEA certificate.

Results for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) were made available on the NZ Qualifications Authority website this morning to more than 165,000 students across Levels 1, 2, and 3, including 5,200 Hawke’s Bay students who were entered to sit NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship exams in 2020.

Of this, 1,018 students were entered to sit some of their NCEA exams online. Online exams were offered in 21 subjects across NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 in 2020, with around 35,000 students entered nationwide.

NZQA deputy chief executive (assessment) Kristine Kilkelly said: "While many students will be relieved to simply have their results back, those who have not achieved the credits they need can find information on the NZQA website about the range of support and options available to them."

Students who sat exams last year faced a year of uncertainty. Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown forced students to adapt to online learning, and exams were delayed by seven days.

As a result, "learning recognition credits" were awarded to students to mitigate the disadvantage caused by the national and Auckland lockdowns.

Students around the country were eligible for one learning recognition credit for every five up to a maximum of 10 credits in level 1, and eight credits at levels two and three. T

The credits would provide up to 13 per cent of the amount required for an NCEA certificate.

Kilkelly said the day had been successful. She said their website experiences heavy traffic on NCEA results release day every year.

“Thousands of students have logged in to check their results and share them with family and friends. Just over 72,000 students had logged in by 4.30 pm.

“Releasing NCEA results is carefully managed so students can quickly and easily access their results.”

Students who sat New Zealand Scholarship exams will be able to view their results online from February 4 and apply for a review or reconsideration until March 5.

In Hawke's Bay, 337 students were entered for the system of competitive awards where top-performing students receive between $500 and $30,000 towards the cost of tertiary education or training.

NZQA’s call centre will be open until 8pm and extra staff are on hand to answer queries students and their families may have about their NCEA results.

The NZQA call centre can be contacted on helpdesk@nzqa.govt.nz or 0800 697 296.
