'Delicate situation': Remains unearthed at Omahu Urupa

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated says Kōiwi (skeletal remains) have been unearthed due to the recent flooding at Omahu Urupa.

"A local hapū authority representative said that a rāhui has not been placed yet to allow for whānau to come in and assess damage to the urupa," NKII said.

They said the situation remains "very delicate".

"Whānau have been wearing gloves and masks as they enter. Potential disease and health risks remain relatively high. There are health and safety issues to consider, particularly around respecting these taonga by all who come across them," NKII said.

"Unless you are whānau, you should not enter. Hapū authority leaders are awaiting expert advice on how to deal with the kōiwi.

A Givealittle page set up by the Utaina Omhau (Group) to clean up and restore the kāenga has already raised $14,593.
