Earthquake-prone buildings review being brought forward good news for Napier says Nimon

The Government bringing forward a review into the earthquake-prone building system will mean more certainty for Napier building owners and tenants, says National MP for Napier Katie Nimon.

“A review was originally scheduled for 2027, but the review will now begin immediately so tenants and building owners have greater certainty," says Nimon.

"While this is underway the remediation deadlines for earthquake-prone buildings will be extended by four years."

“Ensuring our regulations are fit-for-purpose and practical is a key part of our plan to rebuild the economy and this will go a long way for the local businesses that own or operate from earthquake-prone buildings in Napier."

“There are 28 earthquake prone buildings in Napier, including some of our iconic art deco buildings that will be affected by this review. The review will be focused on identifying challenges with the current system, the way overseas jurisdictions manage earthquake risk and barriers to remediation such as costs and heritage status."

“This announcement is a fantastic outcome for Napier, I am pleased to bring this outcome through so quickly in this term."

“There has been an overwhelming amount of feedback from councils and property owners informing us that the system was not working and there were concerns around meeting and enforcing the current deadlines."

“This is all part of the Government’s plan to rebuild the economy so we can lower the cost of living and provide the public services that kiwis deserve. We want to ensure that our regulations are fit for purpose and practical."

“I would like to give a special mention to local Pat Benson who recently passed - he was a strong advocate for pragmatism and a life member of the Art Deco Trust.”
