Evacuation of Aquatic Centre caused by .. burnt toast

Burnt toast briefly interrupted the 2024 Apollo Projects NZ Swimming Championships at the Hawke's Bay Regional Aquatic Centre this evening.

Firefighters were called just after 6.30pm to the centre on Percival Road, Hastings. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said it was a false alarm, with smoke caused by burnt toast.

Hawke's Bay Regional Aquatic Centre General Manager Brendan Bourke and Swimming NZ Head of Participation & Events, Dale Johnson said there was a 45min delay to racing.

"This was due to a fire alarm being activated after smoke was detected in one of the Aquatic Centre offices.

"All systems worked as they should with a full and safe evacuation of the facility. FENZ were on site within minutes and cleared the building quickly."
