Firefighters extinguish boat fire at Napier marina

A boat fire at the Napier marina sent black smoke, and thick flames over Ahuriri this afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the report of a boat on fire at 2.20pm.

Coastguard Hawke's Bay Skipper Henry van Tuel said they first noticed "really black smoke" over Westshore on their way back from towing another boat.

"When we got back to the base, the fire service asked for our assistance in putting a fireman on and attacking the fire from a different angle."

Witness Clive Holland was on Napier Hill when the incident unfolded.

"Without warning, I could see a fierce fire burning. I had my camera handy.

"It was eerily quiet, no one around that I could see and no one taking any notice. After some minutes the fire brigade sirens could be heard."

MORE TO COME.
