Five inmates remain on Hawke's Bay prison roof after one surrenders

Five inmates remain on the roof of Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison after one came down this morning.

The six inmates, who first climbed onto the roof of the youth unit at about 2.30pm yesterday afternoon, spent a frosty night.

In a statement this morning, Chief Custodial Officer Neil Beales says the Prisoner Negotiation Team continues to engage with the remaining five prisoners aged between 17 and 19.

"The area is within the secure perimeter of the prison’s unit, and there is no threat to the wider security of the prison and no threat to public safety.

"All other prisoners in the Youth Unit are safely secured."
