Four-year-old killed in crash “not just any little boy”

Hayley Osterfield, who is Hawke’s Bay App’s Production Manager and Head of Sales and Marketing, is a close family friend of Dylan’s mum Chloe Foster. She tells their story.

A four-year-old from Hawke’s Bay, who was tragically killed in a car crash north of Dannevirke, is being remembered by those close to him as kind-hearted and adventurous, with big dreams.

Dylan (last name omitted) was travelling to Palmerston North with his dad on Friday, when the crash occurred at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Wahipai Close about 4.20pm.

A givealittle page set up to raise funds for Dylan’s funeral, and ongoing support for his family, has already gained $10,445.

His mum, Chloe Foster is unable to comprehend, let alone speak about losing her darling boy whom she affectionately called her “mouse”.

His whānau are all devastated by his death, and immensely grateful for the outpouring of kindness and support.

Dylan had a curly crop of blonde hair, and blue eyes, and a cheeky smile that would light up those around him. He was born in Palmerston North in 2018 and moved to Hawke’s Bay with his mum shortly after.

Despite only turning four in September, Dylan was wise beyond his years and has been described by those close to him as “not just any little boy”.

He was an old soul who had big dreams of doing everything and going everywhere - all tragically cut short. Becoming a BMXing, Dirtbiking, greenfingered engineer, traveling the world and making people smile, were all in his future.

Dylan would often say to Chloe that when he grew up he wanted to “turn into” a policeman so that he could save people.

An only child, he loved playing with his dog Nova and cat Leeloo, and was inseparable with his mum. While he was cheeky in nature, he loved using manners, and was often heard teaching his little friends “please” and “thank you”.

He attended The Den kindergarten in Napier, and enjoyed being outdoors, and gardening. His understanding about the way the natural world worked was incredible. He would often be seen riding his black BMX bike along the Guthrie Park bike track in Havelock North each week.

More often than not, he was the youngest one on the track. Yet, size nor age seemed to phase him or dim his cheeky and competitive nature. He was fearless and determined to be the best BMX racer there was.
