Gold medal? Council's gardening team get creative with Olympic Rings

Napier may be more than 9,000 kilometres away from Tokyo, but that hasn't stopped the council's gardening team from getting into the Olympic spirit.

Red and white violas have been planted in the shape of the Olympic rings by the Soundshell along Marine Parade.

Napier City Council's gardening team leader Shelley Exeter said the gardening team always enjoy being creative and this is another example of their flair and skill.

The Olympic Rings were planted by the Marine Parade team which consists of five gardeners.

"They are a creative and enthusiastic bunch who love a challenge. Tracey is the head gardener and her and the crew always think ahead and come up with something different and enjoy the process."

“We wanted to plant the rings in their authentic colours but it wasn’t possible to get the winter bedding annuals in all of the right colours. So instead the team chose to plant the red and white violas representing Japan, the country hosting the Olympic Games."

Shelley says the rings took a couple of days to plant - "firstly the red rings by a circle hoop guide that the gardeners made up to size and then the inner planting of the white was done".

They expect the gardens will fill out more over the next few weeks and the rings will become more obvious.
