Hastings man charged with murder remanded in custody following first court appearance

A 30-year-old man has appeared in the Hastings District Court this morning charged with murder after a body was found in a burnt-out car earlier this week.

The defendant's name, as well as the name of the victim - a man, is currently suppressed.

The defendant, who was wearing a blue boiler suit, appeared before Justice of the Peace Jemma McDade.

Court security, flanked by police, were stationed around the courtroom.

A large number of the victim's family were in attendance. They arrived at court early and waited for some time after the proceedings had finished.

The defendant was remanded in custody without plea. He is due to appear in the Napier High Court next month.
