Hawke's Bay Regional Council investigates stopbanks as part of multi-million dollar funding

Hawke's Bay Regional Council is investigating several stopbanks on the Heretaunga Plains Flood Control Scheme (HPFCS), as part of funding by Central Government.

The council received $19.2 million of Government funding as part of the COVID-19 recovery for floodplain risk management for the climate change resilience programme.

David Keracher, Acting Manager Regional Projects, said the investigations were part of the work programme and will inform them of its existing conditions.

"This involves excavating test pits and borehole logging through the stopbank at Taradale. These investigation works began late this week and will be completed early next week and as a result there will be temporary diversions in place.

"Before we look at strengthening our stopbanks against climate change, we’ll be excavating some test pits at Taradale by the stopbanks, and cutting through the stopbank on Monday-Tuesday next week."

Keracher said the entire HPFCS covers the low lying plains of the Tūtaekurī, Ngaruroro, and lower Tukituki rivers. It provides flood control and drainage benefits for about 39,000 hectares of land and protection for about 127,000 people.

As a result of this work, Taradale cycle trail users are urged to take care during this time. Cycle trail diversions and signage will be in place. The work is between the Expressway Bridge (Guppy Rd) and the Tūtaekurī River Bridge (by EIT).
