Immune compromised children given boost thanks to Countdown Appeal

Children at the Hawke’s Bay Hospital have been given an isolation room with immediate access to a private outdoor space.

The area was at the top of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s wish list and was granted in 2017 during the Countdowns Kids’ Appeal, with $80,500 donated towards renovations.

A further $32,848.56 was also donated to the hospital to purchase a colposcope for the paediatric ward.

Countdown Group Manager Wayne Dohmen is pleased with the outcome.

“As a business, we are humbled to have been able to help many sick Kiwi kids and their families over the years by providing hospitals with the funds to buy equipment or make a child’s stay more comfortable.”

Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay Paediatric Clinical Nurse Manager, Michelle Robertson says they are extremely happy to have been able to create a safe space for children and their families.

“Thanks to the hugely generous donation by the Countdown Kids’ Hospital Appeal, we have a dedicated isolation room which includes a small kitchenette, ensuite and lounge area, as well as direct access to a small outdoor deck/private entrance”.

After receiving life-saving care from the paediatric ward as a young boy local man Daniel Lee opted to shave his dreads as part of the fundraising initiative for the decking area.

The event gained attention from the Hits Hawkes Bay resulting in many other sponsors donating towards the cause.

The room which was opened to patients earlier in the year has been named Te Kohanga Ora  – The Nest of Wellbeing”
