June at The Globe Theatrette

There’s been quite a lot of darkness at the movies in recent months – and as much as we like a gripping drama, gruesome thriller or tragic biopic, now that the days are getting shorter and colder and winter is imminent, we need cheering up! If you agree, you’ll be glad to hear our June programme is packed with feel-good, life-affirming stories full of hope. We’re calling it the “wellbeing line-up”. Just kidding.

DREAM HORSE (PG, 3 June) is one of those films that have “crowd-pleaser!” written all over them – the true story about a small-town community in Wales getting together to raise a racehorse against all odds is exactly what we need right now: a joyful, inspiring movie to make us “feel good about life” (deadline.com). Stars Toni Collette, Damian Lewis, and apparently, seven horses in total playing Dream Alliance.

We can’t wait to share DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER (M, 10 June) with you – its wryly funny depiction of the sheer hilarity of painful teenage awkwardness facing off against exasperated motherly helplessness had us in stitches. Sue and Daniel are a mother and son duo grudgingly stuck with each other over the summer holidays – they bicker; they argue; sometimes they fight. But in the end, love will prevail – because that’s family, right?

Irish film HERSELF (M, 17 June) is part social commentary on the bleak situation of single mums struggling with violent ex-partners while trying to provide a safe space for their kids, and part utterly inspiring, empowering story of resilience, love and friendship. With housing shortage being a harsh reality here and elsewhere, the story of mother-of-two Sandra, who decides to take control of her life by building her own home, may just be one of the most important films this year. It’s also completely lovely.

Finally, IN THE HEIGHTS (rating TBC, 24 June) is the big-screen, bombastic and exuberant musical we’ve been waiting for a whole year after it was delayed due to Covid-19. Based on a stage musical by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, it’s a love letter to Miranda’s old neighbourhood in Washington Heights, New York City – the kind of vibrant, colourful and magical place that may only exist in the movies. We can’t wait to go there.
