Large fire in Fernhill threatens nearby houses

Firefighters have managed to contain a large fire that broke out in Fernhill, Hastings, and was threatening multiple properties.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Korokipo Road at about 11pm. Twelve appliances attended the scene.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Hawke's Bay Area Commander Ken Cooper said just after midnight the fire was under control.

At its height, the fire was threatening six properties. "It's quite widespread over different areas of Korokipo Road."

Cooper said currently there is no threat to any of the structures.

"Currently there is no damage to residential properties."

Cordons are in place and police are managing the evacuations. Cooper said it is important for people to stay away from the area during this time.

He anticipates they will be onsite for the next few hours until the fire is completely out.

A witness who did not wish to be named said earlier that the fire was on both sides of the road and was spreading.

Residents and those who have been evacuated had congregated further up the road just after 11pm.

 "It's big," the witness said.
