Male in 20s suffers serious injuries after car lands in orchard crates 10 metres above ground

A male driver suffered serious injuries after his car became airborne and landed 10 metres above the ground in a Hastings orchard's crates.

A police spokeswoman said a vehicle seen driving at speed on the wrong side of Karamu Road failed to stop for Police shortly before 12:30am and fled down Kenilworth Road, hit gravel at the base of railway lines, become airborne and gone over a fence, crashing into a stack of fruit bins, ending about 10 metres above the ground.

She said police were not pursuing at the time.

"FENZ attended and assisted with rescuing the male from the car. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The Serious Crash Unit attended. Investigations in the circumstances of the crash are ongoing," she said.

A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokeswoman confirmed at midday the male, in his 20s, was in a stable condition.
