No one located after "extensive" search off Haumoana coast

Extensive searches were conducted and no one was located, after witnesses reported seeing what they believed to be a swimmer in trouble off the coast of Haumoana.

A police spokesperson said they received a report at about 11.20am a member of the public who has sighted a person in trouble in the water at Groin Point in Haumoana.

"Police are responding to this report, and working with SAR, Coastguard and the public to try and locate the person," the spokesperson said at the time.

However, less than two hours later, shortly after 1pm, police said the search was called off.

"Extensive searches were conducted and no one was located, nor were Police able to identify anyone missing in the community."

Coastguard Hawke's Bay said they put in place an incident management team and carried out a search along the Haumoana area, along with Surf Life Saving.

"We were pretty comfortable that there was nothing there," they said.

Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter general manager Ian Wilmot said they searched for about an hour and didn't find anything that looked suspicious.

It is understood at least two independent people reported seeing something suspicious in the water.
