Nursing Building named in honour of EIT stalwart

Despite having retired, EIT stalwart Dr Susan Jacobs' significant contribution to the polytech will forever be remembered with a building named in her honour.

Last week, friends and former colleagues celebrated the naming of the Susan Jacobs Building - formerly known as N Block - on the EIT campus in Taradale.

At the time of her retirement in 2016, Dr Jacobs, MNZM, was the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Humanities & Health Science.

During her 30-year-career at EIT Jacobs was instrumental in leading the development of a wide range of programmes including EIT’s first bachelor degree, the Bachelor of Nursing (introduced in 1996), its first master, the Master of Nursing (introduced in 2001), and other programmes, including Te Hono ki Toi (Poutiriao) Master of Professional Creative Practice (2015).

Born in the USA, Jacobs relocated to New Zealand in 1986, when she took up the position of associate head of school, nursing and health studies at what was then called Hawke’s Bay Polytechnic.

Susan was Head of Nursing (1989-1993), Dean, Faculty of Health & Sport Science (1993-2013), and Executive Dean, Faculty of Education, Humanities & Health Science (2014-2016).
