One arrested following fight at Tamatea supermarket

One person has been arrested following a large fight in the carpark of PAK'nSAVE Tamatea this afternoon.

Police were called to the incident on the corner of Leicester Avenue and Coventry Avenue, Tamatea shortly after 2.40pm.

A police spokeswoman said there are varying reports of how many people were involved, but there is believed to have been between five to ten people.

"Initial suggestion from some callers who reported the fighting was that gang members appeared to be involved," she said.

No one was injured and no firearms or knives were involved.

A witness said the situation unfolded quickly and involved at least one Mongrel Mob member.

She said a woman went instore, leaving one Mongrel Mob member and a child, roughly six-years-old inside the car.

"Next thing there are approximately seven males surrounding the car. [They] started trying to get into the car, leaning through windows. Lots of shouting and swearing."

She said a female shopper "got in their faces" and tried to tell them to stop but "it didn't work".

"The child managed to escape through the passenger door. When they did eventually drag one of the guys out there were lots of punches thrown in a two-three on one situation."

While others were still trying to get the Mongrel Mob member out of the car, another car turned up with two more females and males who joined in the "shouting match".

She rang the police as soon as they surrounded the car and spent 14 minutes on the line. "I was very scared, mainly for the child in the car and that my own child was witnessing it", the woman said.

By the time police arrived, the fight had spread to another area of the carpark.

Foodstuffs NZ, which owns Pak ‘nSave, said they were unable to provide any additional comment as the matter remains with Police.
