Police arrest man in Karamu Stream after attempting to flee

Police officers managed to retrieve a fleeing man from the Karamu Stream and arrest him during the early hours of this morning.

Police said officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Te Ara Kahikatea, in the Hastings suburb of Whakatu, about 1.30am.

"The vehicle fled and was abandoned a short time later with the occupants leaving the scene on foot," a police spokeswoman said.

Two people were arrested "quite promptly" at the scene, but the third person fled into the Karamu Stream.

"We managed to pull him out of the water and arrest him."

One person out of the three arrested has been charged.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop when followed and is due to appear in Hastings District Court on Monday.
