Power outage for parts of Napier after truck collides with power poles

Power is out in parts of Napier after a truck collided with two power poles this afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said they were notified of the incident on the corner of Wakefield St and Niven St at 2.20pm.

While there were no injuries, she said a witness has described one of the power poles coming down onto a parked vehicle.

She said the road is closed between Wakefield St and the western end of Edmundson St." It is understood it will be closed "well into the night" she said.

Unison relationship manager Danny Gough said a high load impacted on the overhead electricity and taken down lines and two power poles.

Immediately 200 customers were affected at the time. But that number has since gone down to about 40, Gough said.

"We are just continuing to obviously do repairs and we will reduce that number down as we go. but our crews are on-site and given the extent of the damage it will take us at least another two or so hours to get everyone back on and running."

The affected customers are on Wakefield St, Niven St, and Edmundson St.

"We appreciate it obviously causes an impact for our customers so our crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power as quickly as we can."
