Sacred Heart College students awarded NZ Scholarship

Four Sacred Heart College students have gained five New Zealand Scholarship awards.

The recipients include current year 13 students Cara Kuzman and Tamar Aiken, also Deputy Head Girl, who achieved Scholarship Geography while in year 12.

Eva Wright, 2023 Deputy Head Girl, was awarded two scholarships: one in Painting and another in Photography. Fellow 2023 leaver Michaela Wilson was awarded a scholarship in Classical Studies, as well as a $25,000 scholarship to Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington.

Sacred Heart College Principal Maria Neville-Foster says she is so very proud of their results and congratulates the students and teachers on their achievements.

“This is a wonderful boost to the students at SHC. They are all so happy to see each other succeed and after what started as a very challenging year with some loss of learning these results are exceptional.”

Mrs Neville-Foster congratulated Head of Social Sciences James Wakefield, Head of Art Sandie Howlett and Classical Studies teacher Dr Amanda Aarons.

“The nurturing and care that the teachers can give to our students at SHC really helps to push them to achieve their potential. Our students are consistently encouraged to strive for their best and our teachers go above and beyond to help them achieve that.”

Eva says the support she received from her teacher Miss Howlett was invaluable and contributed to her success.

“I would not be anywhere near as good as I am without Miss Howlett. She pushes you in the best way possible. Honestly, all the teachers are amazing.”

While Eva had taken painting before, it was her first year doing photography, let alone at scholarship level.

“I was pretty surprised to get both scholarships. I wasn't expecting photography, but I was really hoping for painting.”

It was the same reaction for Cara and Tamar, who weren’t expecting to be awarded the scholarship in Geography. They follow in the footsteps of last year’s Head Girl Lucia Urquhart who also gained Scholarship Geography while in year 12.

“I’m really happy and proud that I was able to get it, especially being in year 12,” Cara says.

“I had no idea what to expect because I had never done a scholarship exam before. I didn’t know if what I had written was good enough for it.”

Cara says her teacher Mr Wakefield was incredibly supportive, organising lunchtime study sessions to prepare for the exam.

“Mr Wakefield helped us so much. He had so many resources that we could utilise. Lucia was also helpful as she had done it the year before.”
