St John Ambulance officers receive support after inadvertently walking into scene of serious assault

Ambulance officers who thought they were responding to a medical emergency but were instead confronted with an assault of an elderly mother and her son, are being provided with support.

St John Hawke’s Bay Territory Manager Brendon Hutchinson confirmed to Hawke's Bay App they received a call at 7.46am yesterday morning via a St John Telecare representative after a St John Medical Alarm was triggered at the property on Kennedy Road, Napier.

A woman in her 90s and her son, a man in his 70s, were seriously injured in the assault at the woman's home.

Hutchinson said three ambulances and one Rapid Response Unit responded to the scene where they treated and transported two patients to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, one in a critical condition and the other in a moderate condition.

A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokesperson said this afternoon both patients were in a stable condition.

Hutchinson said St John is providing support to its ambulance officers who responded to the incident. He referred further inquiries to New Zealand Police.

Police continue to appeal to the public for further information on the serious assault, which they say occurred sometime between 7am and 8am. They would like to hear from residents and anyone else who was in the general area of Nelson Park and Kennedy Road prior to and around this time and may have noticed anything untoward.

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Police on 105 quoting job number P046918973. Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
