Swimmer rescued by member of the public at Waipatiki Beach

A swimmer at Waipatiki Beach has been rescued by a member of the public after being pulled out to sea by a rip.

Police, Hawke's Bay Coastguard and a rescue helicopter were alerted to the incident at 9.38am this morning.

However, at 9.47am, the rescue was called off as the man had been pulled onto a board by a member of the public, a police spokeswoman said.

"A doctor on scene has requested an ambulance and he is going to be checked over."

Hawke's Bay Coastguard skipper Henry van Tuel said they were stood down six minutes after first being alerted.
