Teenager in critical condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital following workplace accident

A teenage roofing contractor is in a critical condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital following a workplace incident in Napier this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident at the PGG Wrightson wool store site off Pandora Road just before 11am.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said they received the call at 10.49am and sent two ambulances and transported one patient in a critical condition to Hawke's Bay Hospital.

The Greenlea Taupo helicopter, stationed in Hastings while the Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter is out of the region for servicing, was called but not needed.

Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter Trust general manager Ian Wilmot said by the time they landed, the decision had been made that the patient could be transported by road ambulance.

A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokeswoman said this afternoon that a teenaged male was in a critical condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Grant Edwards, PGG Wrightson General Manager Wool confirmed to Hawke's Bay App that there had been an incident at their wool store this morning involving one of their roofing contractors.

He said they had "immediately referred" the incident to WorkSafe and one of their health and safety officers is "on a plane as we speak".

"We've been replacing the roof on our Napier wool store and as such we employ and send that out to a contractor and it was one of them.

"Our thoughts are certainly with the person that has been injured."

He said they have routinely checked the roof multiple times a year for the last four to five years.

A police spokeswoman said they attended the scene before midday and spoke to people who were there. They have since notified WorkSafe.

WorkSafe confirmed it had been notified of an incident in Napier.

"We understand the incident involved a fall from a height. WorkSafe is making initial inquiries to establish what its next steps might be."
