Three people taken to hospital after car struck a power pole

Three people have been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital this evening after the car they were travelling in struck a power pole.

The road was closed for a time on SH5 Eskdale due to the crash between SH2 and Hill Road, just after 6pm.

A police spokeswoman said a contraflow system is now in place, so traffic can get through however it will slow traffic up significantly.

Motorists are still asked to avoid the area if possible or delay their journey.

She said the car was removed from the scene at 7.10pm, but contractors are still at the scene fixing the downed-power pole.

It is understood one person was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the other two had moderate injuries, she said.

An inquiry into the crash continues.
