Urgent remedial work on Napier Library complete, building set to re-open

Remedial works on the sprinkler system in the area of the MTG building that is occupied by the library are now complete and will re-open next week.

The MTG Hawke's Bay and Napier Library were abruptly closed on December 23 for "urgent remedial work" on the building’s sprinkler system.

At the time, Napier City Council said remedial work previously commenced in early December, but a greater safety risk to staff and customers was identified.

The fixings supporting the sprinkler pipes to the ceiling needed to be upgraded to ensure they were of sufficient load-bearing capacity.

An NCC spokesperson said Napier Library staff are pleased that they’ll be back soon and are looking forward to welcoming the community once more.

The Century Theatre has been up and running since late January and the museum’s pop-up shop is operating in the theatre foyer, unless the area is required by theatre events.

Work continues on the MTG Hawke’s Bay side of the building. The museum is expected to re-open in the middle of the year.

Napier Library will reopen to the public on Tuesday, April 13.
