Video: Central Hawke's Bay Mayor shows how Waipawa river flooded part of the town

A month on from Cyclone Gabrielle hitting the region, Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Alex Walker recounted the day the water came rushing through.

Walker took Hawke’s Bay App to an area near the road bridge out of town, where flood water came under the bridge, having breached the stop banks further up. It had flooded the back of some industrial and residential properties before flowing under the bridge and inundating the local skate park.  It went under the rail bridge and damaged the abutments to the bridge, before going through to a campsite.

Council staff had been monitoring the river levels so took the decision to start the evacuation process in the southern part of town.
