Violent night in Hawke's Bay: Police officer struck by car at checkpoint, two injured in drive-by shooting

Two people were shot at in a drive-by shooting, and a police officer was struck in two separate incidents in Hawke's Bay overnight.

Emergency services were called to West Quay Napier at 12.33am this morning after shots were fired from vehicle as it drove up to a bar in the area.

A police spokeswoman said two men outside the bar sustained serious injuries. "The CIB is investigating and more information will be released when it becomes available," she said.

A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokeswoman said a man in 20s and a man in his 30s are both in a stable condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Less than four hours earlier, a police officer sustained leg injuries after being struck by a car in Havelock North.

The police spokeswoman said police were carrying out an impairment checkpoint (breath testing) in Havelock North when a stolen vehicle failed to stop at the checkpoint and struck an officer in the process.

"The vehicle was spiked shortly after and the driver was arrested without further incident.

"A 25-year-old male from Napier will be facing a number of driving charges, including driving without a licence. He also has a warrant to arrest."

She said the officer was transported to hospital in a moderate condition with leg injuries. A HBDHB spokeswoman confirmed the police officer is in a stable condition.

The Serious Crash Unit and CIB are investigating.
