WorkSafe investigating after forestry worker killed, Tangoio

WorkSafe is investigating after a forestry worker died while working at a commercial pine forest in Tangoio yesterday afternoon.

Police were notified of the workplace incident on Aropaoanui Road at 3.54pm, where one person died at the scene.

Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter general manager Ian Wilmot confirmed they were dispatched to the scene at about 3.20pm. It is understood the worker was in his 20s.

He said the harvesting crew were working on a "very steep" embankment. "The person was part of the harvest crew that was down the steep slope and our understanding is that a large log has either slipped or fallen down the bank."

They assisted with a winch extraction to lift the man to flatter ground, Mr Wilmot said.

As the matter is now under investigation, WorkSafe says they are unable to make any further comment.
