Session to help migrants understand our school system

A free information session for migrants is being held in Napier tomorrow to explain how the New Zealand school system works.

The speaker at the session will be Roy Sye, the Ministry of Education’s Director of Education for Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti, and a former principal of Tamatea Intermediate and a former Napier city councillor.

The types of questions to be addressed at the session include:

  • Do you have to pay for schooling in New Zealand?
  • What are the fees?
  • Why am I asked to give a donation to the school?
  • What are the school hours?
  • Can I take my child out of school for a holiday during term time?
  • What school would suit my child?

The session is being held at the Citizens Advice Bureau, 126 Hastings St, Napier (next door to the BNZ), and it runs tomorrow (Tuesday) from 1pm to 2pm.

For more information, contact CAB Napier’s manager, Jenny Pearce, on 06 835 7139.

Among their many services, Citizens Advice Bureaus offers face-to-face support to new migrants.
