Shayne Walker appointed chair of the region’s District Health Board

Shayne Walker, the head of Māori Business at the Bank of New Zealand and a former Māori health manager at Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, has been appointed as the DHB’s chair.

The appointment was announced by Health Minister Dr David Clark.

Mr Walker replaces Kevin Atkinson, who said yesterday he was surprised and disappointed to lose the role.

Mr Walker’s work experience includes seven years with the Department of Corrections as a Probation Officer, Service Manager and Change Manager.

He has also worked as Māori Health Manager for Hawke’s Bay DHB, General Manager for the Maungaharuru-Tangitu Trust, Managing Director of Foot Steps Ltd, Director of Wharerata Forest Company and is currently Head of Māori Business at the Bank of New Zealand. He currently a Board Trustee of Anewa Farm Trust and Te Awahohonu Forest Trust.

Mr Walker was also Co-Chair of MATARIKI – Hawke’s Bay Regional Development Governance Group from 2016-2018. He has a Diploma of Applied Business Management and a Master of Business Administration, Māori Economic Development.

Evan Davies, the managing director of Todd Property, has been appointed deputy chair, while Joanne Edwards and Wairoa-based regional councillor Charles Lambert have been appointed members of the DHB.

The appointees’ terms run from December 9 through until December 5, 2022.

The appointed members of the DHB join those members who were elected in September’s local elections: Kevin Atkinson, Peter Dunkerley, Ana Apatu, Anna Lorck, Hayley Anderson, Heather Skipworth and David Davidson.
